A coaching model that makes the difference
You might be wondering what happens in one of our Coaching sessions. That’s a great question that I will answer here.
How much you can change and how much you can achieve depends first of all on your attitude and on your commitment to do the tasks you are asked for during each session. But it also depends greatly on the quality of the Coach and the coaching methodology.
I’ve created a model
SMART Coaching Model
This model tackles most -if not all- of the problems that could get between you and what you want.
Setting the stage for achievement
Most people do not achieve their goals due to the lack of solid goal foundations. Goal foundations create great clarity and true intrinsic motivation. Let’s see what they are.
Clarify your current state
You will be assisted to objectively determine where you stand, without any judgment and from a wider perspective. Being clear on the problem, the resources you have at hand and the consequences of not acting, you’ll start to really feel the motivation to move away from that place into some place better, as if you were standing on fire.
“The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are.”
Defining the desired state
We are not taught to establish well-formed goals at school or at home. Without them, you’ll either stay paralyzed where you are or keep yourself busy with unlimited activities that will take you nowhere and will waste your time and energy. A well-formed goal will generate the motivation needed to keep you moving till you get there.
“If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.”
Finding the fundamental value
Values are what’s most important for us; the reason why we do what we do. They are the best and most natural source of motivation. Finding the fundamental value behind your objective is the step that crowns the process of formulating good goals. Now your goal will have a way to be bigger than itself.
“If you lost your purpose you have lost your way.”
Making resources from obstacles
We all have obstacles in the road towards our goals, but foreseeing them and addressing them beforehand will allow you to tackle them and get there. Some obstacles are out there, but the harder ones are inside us, and their power lies on their invisibility and subtleness.
Revising your beliefs
Beliefs are the principles that guide our actions. They grant us permission (or not) to even start trying to do something. We take them as true so they become self-fulfilled prophecies that filter our perception; accommodating reality to fit our map of the world. There are not good neither bad beliefs; but some help you and some limit you.
“Whether you think you can, or think you can’t… you are right.”
Many times frustration and worries blind our ability to remember the many resources we have, and that just by using one or two we could tackle any obstacle that might get in our way. With NLP, we can also help you create inner resources to have them at your disposal when you need them, like emotional states and moods.
“Most people have no idea of the giant capacity we can immediately command when we focus all of our resources on mastering a single area of our lives.”
Habits are the things we do automatically, without thinking. They allow us to focus on other important things, simplifying our lives. But they can also limit us greatly, by sabotaging our plans and limiting our choices. We will address your limiting habits and then create resourceful new ones, if you think you need them.
“We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.”
Action plan elaboration
The following step is to know how to get where you want to be. Most people fail to achieve their goals because they only take random actions, usually based on the things they are comfortable doing.
Flexibility is critical for survival and success. Humans have the capacity to access memories to look for ways to confront a situation. We can even find options that belong to others but which we can easily adopt. But we can also project our minds into the future and imagine all sorts of possible options in order to choose the one that best suits us. Our mind is a powerful machine people know little of, and we can help you tap into that endless field of possibilities that will allow you to act, think and feel the way you want to in every situation.
“Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
Creating a plan
A plan will involve the chosen options, deadlines and account for contingencies. With NLP, planning takes a whole new meaning and will increase the chances of reaching your goal.
“By failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail.”
Relying on your Coach’s support
The work is not over after a coaching session ends. What you do out there in life allows you to put old limiting beliefs and habits in the spotlight, challenge them and try new ones on so that real change happens.
We all need support in life. But when it comes to change and personal evolution, support is critical. We will support you by helping you program your mind to act, react and/or feel in different and resourceful ways, so that in a way it’s like you’re having your Coach with you when you face the challenges that wait for you after each session. We will also hold you accountable for your goals and commitments and help you set structures in your life to remind you of the things to do to consolidate change and achieve your goals.
When we meet in your next session we’ll go through what happened between sessions so you can take powerful conclusions, learn from you experience and get your questions answered.
Once aware of your options, you must act! Nothing is done without an action. Even a little one today can have a huge impact tomorrow; but without any, you’ll end up in the same path over and over again. In each session we’ll create tasks that will challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone, so that you can expand, create new capabilities and see the world with new sets of eyes that will enrich your experience.
“My dreams are worthless, my plans are dust, my goals are impossible. All are of no value unless they are followed by action.”
